Ash the Porcupine - SING by FilmmakerJ Ash the Porcupine - SING by FilmmakerJ
The movie "Sing," by Illumination Entertainment is probably one of the most uplifting and engaging animated films I've seen in a while. It is clearly a very pop-culture based flick, with an emphasis on moments and types of characters that will elicit the best reactions and emotions from an audience, based around an all too common element of modern media culture, the singing competition.

What I'm basically trying to say is that the film can appear rather shallow and intended to garner the most appeal based solely on its already popular premise. But this movie greatly impressed me. Each of the characters and their stories are unique, understandable, relatable, and very economically presented. The film never feels like it has too much going on because it makes time to effectively present each character's personal arc, some obviously more than others. However, no one feels like they are under-explained or lacking in development. And the music is obviously a huge highlight due to each song that each character sings: both their initial song choice, as well as the song they eventually choose to perform at the end of the film, which again adds to their transitional arcs.

Out of all of the characters, though, I think I appreciated Ash the most, because of her more a-typical, tom-boyish personality. She has a very loose fashion sense, which shows that she values comfort over style. And yet she exudes this vibrant passion in her music and singing that it all too frustrating to see her boyfriend try to suppress. I'm also not entirely sure, but I think Ash's song during the climax was the only original song in the film, which if it is, was a wonderful effort by the filmmakers to be true to her story.

At the end of the day, though, I think I gravitate towards characters like Ash who have an a-typical but well defined sense of identity, because I haven't quite allowed myself to go all the way with my personal expression, therefore, I identify myself through them.

If you have not seen "Sing" yet, it is not another "Zootopia." It is very much it's own thing. And you are missing out if you don't go see it before it leaves theaters.
